Workshop Schedule

Grip & Setup

9:00-10:00 - What kind of gear do you need to shoot in studio and how do you set it up? The first thing we'll do is overview the gear and how to get it. We will talk about budget friendly set ups that work for garages and shops so you can duplicate it at home. We will also talk about shooting tethered so you can get the most out of your shoots.

Basics of Lighting

10:00-11:00 - You'll need some basic technical understanding of how lights work, how your camera communicates with lights and the limitations and advantages of using strobes. We'll teach you how to position lights, change the settings and get your came set up right.

Working with Models

11:00-1:00 - Lighting an egg is one thing, but lighting a model is another beast altogether. In this section, we'll see how lighting falls on a model, how to understand lighting a person, how to create different lighting types (low key, high key, silhouettes, even lighting, and more). You'll see how to overcome common problems.

Lunch

1:00-2:00 - It's going to be a long day, so we'll take a break to enjoy a good burger downtown near the studio. It's a good opportunity to network and glean from other photographers before we dive back into editing.

LR+PS Editing

2:00-4:00 - Taking a great shot is only half of the process. Editing it correctly is what separates hobbyists from experienced professionals. We will take our images and see how to take a raw file, tone it in LR to get a good working RAW image for detailed skin retouching, selective toning, reshaping and more in Photoshop. (You'll need a laptop with Light Room & Photoshop).

USing B.O.S.

4:00-5:00 - If you're not quite ready to drop thousands of dollars on a studio set up, you're in luck... big time! Billings Open Studio downtown is a gorgeous 3rd story studio with a great lighting setup and a lot of natural light. It's inexpensive to use and offers a lot of background. For this portion we'll head to BOS and show you how to use their gear so you can rent their space to do your own studio photography!

Guided Shoot

5:00-6:00 - At the end, we'll take everything we've learned an do a guided shoot with an Oluanai model. David will be with you every step of the way to ensure you get the best shots possible.
